Academic Counselling Specialist Job Description

As an Academic Counselling Specialist, you will work closely with students to understand their academic needs and aspirations. You will provide individualized counselling sessions, conduct assessments, and develop personalized academic plans. Additionally, you will collaborate with faculty and other support staff to ensure students receive the necessary resources and assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual academic counselling sessions to students, addressing their academic concerns and goals
  • Assess students' academic strengths and weaknesses through interviews, assessments, and review of academic records
  • Develop personalized academic plans for students, taking into consideration their academic goals, interests, and capabilities
  • Assist students in course selection, scheduling, and registration
  • Monitor students' academic progress and provide support and guidance as needed
  • Collaborate with faculty and other support staff to identify and address students' academic needs
  • Refer students to appropriate resources and support services, such as tutoring, career counseling, and mental health services
  • Stay updated on current educational trends, policies, and programs to provide accurate and relevant information to students
  • Maintain records of counselling sessions and student progress
  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance counselling skills and knowledge

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field
  • Previous experience in academic counselling or advising
  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Ability to build rapport and establish trusting relationships with students
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of educational systems, programs, and resources
  • Familiarity with career planning and college admissions processes
  • Empathy and understanding of students' academic and personal challenges
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines
  • Proficient in using counseling software and tools
