Job Title: Assistant Manager – Legal (Service Tax, VAT & Dispute Resolution)
Department: Legal
Reports To: Manager – Legal / Head – Legal
Location: Indore
Budget: Upto 10 LPA
Job Purpose:
To manage and support the company’s legal functions with a focus on Service Tax, VAT, and civil, commercial disputes and arbitration. The role involves handling tax litigations, ensuring legal compliance, managing external counsel, and mitigating legal risks related to both taxation and commercial operations.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Indirect Tax (Service Tax & VAT):
• Handle all litigation and legal matters pertaining to Service Tax, Value Added Tax (VAT), and
other pre-GST indirect taxes.
• Prepare, review, and file responses to Show Cause Notices, Assessment Orders, and Audit
Reports.
• Draft and file appeals, petitions, and written submissions before relevant authorities such as
Appellate Commissioners, Tribunals (CESTAT), and High Courts.
• Coordinate with finance, accounts, and tax consultants for compiling supporting documents and preparing case files.
• Maintain a structured database of ongoing and closed tax litigations, along with deadlines and compliance requirements.
B. Civil & Commercial Disputes:
• Manage disputes arising from contracts, supply chain, vendor/customer agreements, service
level issues, and commercial transactions.
• Draft, review, and vet legal notices, responses, plaints, writ petitions, suits, and settlement
agreements.
• Liaise with external advocates and legal consultants to ensure effective representation in civil
courts, arbitration forums, and commercial courts.
• Assist in pre-litigation assessments, negotiations, and out-of-court settlements to reduce legal exposure.
C. Coordination & Documentation:
• Maintain updated litigation trackers, legal MIS reports, and case briefs for internal reporting.
• Support internal stakeholders in responding to audit queries, legal reviews, and official inquiries.
• Coordinate with statutory bodies, law firms, and consultants on ongoing matters.
Qualifications & Experience:
• LL.B. or LL.M. from a recognized university.
• 7-10 years of experience in indirect tax litigation (Service Tax, VAT) and civil/commercial legal
matters.
• Prior experience in a corporate legal department or reputed law firm handling similar portfolios is preferred.
Key Competencies:
• Strong knowledge of indirect tax laws (Service Tax, VAT) and litigation procedures.
• Sound understanding of civil and commercial law, including contract law and dispute
resolution mechanisms.
• Excellent legal drafting, research, and communication skills.
• Ability to handle multiple matters simultaneously with attention to detail.
• Strong coordination and stakeholder management capabilities.
